Surya is a songwriter and recording artist who has provided music for spiritual retreats, healing seminars and children’s yoga camps for over ten years. His music blends a classical training in voice and guitar with melodic roots of Celtic and Indian devotional music into a unique style that is full of intimacy and spiritual depth.

Inspired by the ecstatic wisdom of poet mystics, such as Kabir, Rumi, Milarepa and St. Francis as well as the sound of ancient yogic and Tibetan mantras, Surya’s sensitive performances stir the soul and open the heart.

Artist Statement

Searching for answers, the journey begins. What is sound? Where is silence? How is a voice truly natural? What is the experience of the awakened ones? Music becomes a doorway to that experience. Candy sweet "New Age" does not take me there. My journey finds a unity in the sean-nos singers of Ireland and the ragas of India. Finding the sound of my voice with a teacher who had lost his (due to a stroke). He continued to teach over a hundred students a week for the next fifteen years, teaching by instinct, few words and vigilant awareness. I am drawn to the lyrics of those true humans who have lived authentically and seen the light within: yogis and mystics of all faiths. Through their authentic experience I am inspired to create art songs merging melody with the transcendent poetry of Kabir, Rumi, Ramkrishna, and others. Music whose purpose is to resonate in the heart and invoke that continuous revelation, music which becomes a magnetic attraction towards the silence within.
